When to go

Cool mornings and dry weather are best. Heavy rain can affect roads, while the exposed grounds become very hot in summer.

Things to see and do

Visit both missions, which are not far apart. Trinidad's town plan is clearly recognisable, while Jesús stands out for the walls of its unfinished church and distinctive arches.

Practical tips

Treat the sites as places with a complex colonial and religious history. Bring water, insect repellent and sun protection, and follow notices about roadblocks and weather.

Getting there and getting around

Encarnación is a convenient base. The missions can be reached by car, with a guide or by regional transport; check the return timetable and road conditions in advance.

Where to stay

Encarnación offers the widest choice of accommodation. For more quiet, you can stay closer to Trinidad, but arrange transport and meals beforehand.

What to try

Try chipa, sopa paraguaya, mbejú, meat dishes and cold mate-based tereré.
