Jamestown

Country: Saint Helena Updated:

Jamestown is the capital of Saint Helena, stretching along a narrow volcanic valley between steep dark slopes and the South Atlantic. Georgian buildings, St James' Church, The Castle, gardens and a museum line the main street; the archway, Wharf and waterfront area lie beside the sea. The historic Jacob's Ladder rises almost vertically above the town.

When to go

December to March is warmer, and June to September cooler; more frequent rainy periods usually fall between late March and early May and from July to September. The climate is mild throughout the year, but the valley can be hot and higher ground cool and windy. A dry morning suits the ladder and town walks; check current access first.

Things to see and do

Walk along Main Street from the sea gate to St James' Church, The Castle, Castle Gardens and the Museum of St Helena. Climb Jacob's Ladder only when it is officially open and you can manage its very steep steps. Visit the Wharf and Marine Centre on the waterfront; outside town, Longwood House, Plantation House and viewpoints along the island's ridge are worthwhile.

Practical tips

Jamestown is steep and can become hot at midday; water, sun protection and comfortable shoes are important. Jacob's Ladder may close temporarily for building work or safety reasons, so follow local notices. Cards are not accepted everywhere and there are no cash machines; arrange cash or a Tourist Card in advance. Restaurants and journeys should be reserved.

Getting there and getting around

The island has regular flights according to a published schedule; cruise ships and yachts also arrive. A mountain road leads from the airport to Jamestown by taxi, rental car or bus. Many destinations in town are walkable, but Longwood and other parts of the island require a vehicle.

Where to stay

Historic hotels and guesthouses in Jamestown are convenient for the museum, waterfront and restaurants. Half Tree Hollow above the town offers more modern facilities and cooler air; rural cottages in the interior are suitable for walks and trips to Longwood.

What to try

Try fishcakes, the spiced rice dish plo, fresh tuna, pumpkin stew, curries, coconut sweets and local bananas. The island is also known for rare Saint Helena coffee, grown in small quantities and served in some cafés.
