Hollókő
Hollókő is a living traditional Palóc village in northern Hungary. Whitewashed houses with wooden galleries, a small church, agricultural land and a medieval castle preserve the character of a settlement shaped mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries.
When to go
Spring and autumn are good for quiet walks, while an early visit is recommended in summer. The village is especially lively at Easter and during other traditional festivals, so transport and accommodation should be reserved early.
Things to see and do
Walk along the old village's main street, visit small museums and craft workshops, see the wooden church and climb to the castle ruins. Also allow time for the surrounding cultural landscape.
Practical tips
Hollókő is an inhabited village, not a stage set. Do not enter private courtyards or block passages, and ask residents before taking photographs. Sturdy shoes are useful for the cobbled streets and castle path.
Getting there and getting around
Hollókő lies about one hundred kilometres northeast of Budapest. The easiest way to reach it is by car or organised tour; for bus journeys, check connections and the last return service in advance.
Where to stay
Stay in a guesthouse in Hollókő or a neighbouring village to experience it after the day groups leave. Budapest remains a convenient base for a day trip.
What to try
Try Palóc soup, stuffed cabbage, pork dishes, homemade pastries, strudel and regional fruit drinks.
