Gustavia

Country: Saint Barthélemy Updated:

Gustavia is the capital of Saint Barthélemy and the island’s main port. Sailing boats and yachts fill the sheltered narrow bay; along the waterfront streets are restaurants, shops and buildings where French island culture meets traces of the Swedish period. Former forts stand above the bay, and the small Shell Beach is nearby.

When to go

December to April is usually drier, less humid and particularly lively; this is the high season, with the highest prices. May and early June are quieter and still warm. Hurricane season lasts from June to November, making weather forecasts and flexible booking terms important.

Things to see and do

Walk around the harbour and through the narrow streets, climb to the viewpoints at Fort Gustav and Fort Karl, and visit Wall House and the small Brigantin Museum. Swim at Shell Beach and book a boat tour or water taxi to neighbouring bays. In the evening, return to the waterfront for sunset and a meal by the water.

Practical tips

Crime levels are low, but valuables should not be left in vehicles or unattended on the beach; avoid isolated areas after dark. Carry proof of identity, observe French regulations and do not underestimate the heat. Insurance should cover water sports and possible medical evacuation; follow the authorities’ instructions during hurricane season.

Getting there and getting around

Saint Barthélemy is reached by small regional aircraft via Rémy de Haenen Airport or by ferry from Saint-Martin and Sint Maarten directly into Gustavia’s harbour. Travel around the island is mainly by hire car or taxi; roads are steep and winding. Scooters are suitable only for experienced riders, and helmets are compulsory.

Where to stay

A hotel, apartment or villa in Gustavia suits those who want access to the harbour, restaurants and evening walks without a car. Saint-Jean is convenient for the beach and airport; Colombier and other hillside locations offer peace and views but require a vehicle. Book early for the winter high season.

What to try

Try cod accras, fresh fish and spiny lobster, spicy colombo, goat dishes, French pastries and rum punch.
