The Grotto, Saipan

Country: Northern Mariana Islands Updated:

The Grotto is a natural limestone sinkhole in northern Saipan, filled with intensely blue seawater. The underground pool is connected to the open ocean by three submerged tunnels, making it one of the Mariana Islands’ best-known cave-diving sites. A long staircase leads down to the water; the surrounding area is part of the Bird Island protected area.

When to go

Sea conditions, waves and currents matter more than the month. The drier season usually has more clear days, but strong surf can occur at any time. For diving or snorkelling, choose a day approved by a certified local operator; cancel entry into the water if there are warnings, a closure or worsening weather.

Things to see and do

First view the cave from above, then descend the stairs to the rock platform when access is open. Experienced divers may explore the tunnels only with a qualified guide and suitable equipment; local accompaniment is also advisable for snorkelling. Nearby, the Bird Island viewpoint and historic sites in northern Saipan are worth visiting.

Practical tips

The official tourism website warns that strong currents here can be extremely dangerous. Do not jump in or swim independently, do not enter the water in rough seas and never pass through the tunnels without cave-diving training. The steps are steep and wet; non-slip shoes, free hands and water are important. Take all rubbish back with you.

Getting there and getting around

The Grotto is in northern Saipan within the Bird Island protected area. From Garapan and the main hotels, travel north by hire car, taxi or tour operator. A constructed staircase leads from the car park to the cave; public transport to the site is limited.

Where to stay

Garapan offers the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and diving operators. Tanapag and San Roque are closer to the northern sights and suit a quieter base near the Grotto and Bird Island.

What to try

Try Chamorro kelaguen, red rice, grilled chicken, kadun pika, fresh fish, coconut dishes and cassava-based apigigi. Carolinian, Japanese, Korean, Filipino and American culinary influences are also clearly present on Saipan.
