When to go

Choose cool morning hours and preferably dry weather for walking around. Roads can deteriorate and stone surfaces become slippery during the rainy season.

Things to see and do

Visit the museum, Hill Ruins, Great Enclosure with its tall conical tower and accessible areas in the valley. A local guide explains the city’s layout, stone birds and links to long-distance trade routes.

Practical tips

Do not climb walls or move stones, and respect areas of spiritual importance to local communities. Travel between towns in daylight where possible and check fuel, communication, electricity supply and road conditions.

Getting there and getting around

The monument is near Masvingo. Visitors usually arrive by car, with a driver or on an organised tour; longer journeys from Harare or Bulawayo should be planned with daylight hours in mind.

Where to stay

Masvingo and accommodation near the monument are practical bases. Clarify water, electricity, security and transport before booking.

What to try

Try sadza with meat or vegetables, stewed leafy greens, bean dishes, chicken and regional seasonal produce.
