Gola-Tiwai Complex

Country: Sierra Leone Updated:

The Gola-Tiwai Complex is a serial World Heritage Site comprising Gola Rainforest National Park and Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary. It protects one of the largest remaining blocks of Upper Guinean forest, river ecosystems and many endemic species. Western chimpanzees, pygmy hippopotamuses, forest elephants and hundreds of bird, fish, butterfly and dragonfly species live here.

When to go

Arrange your visit in advance with the park management or an official tour operator. Roads, guides, accommodation and routes can change because of rain and local conditions. Birdwatching and wildlife observation are usually planned for early morning or towards evening; the specific programme can only be confirmed after checking the weather and available services.

Things to see and do

Through the official park, you can arrange birdwatching, day and night walks, multi-day routes, Tiwai Island visits and village programmes. Always go with a trained guide, keep your distance from animals, do not use flash, do not feed primates and follow community rules. Take non-biodegradable waste back with you.

Practical tips

The journey requires preparation for remote tropical forest: medically recommended malaria precautions, vaccinations, clothing that covers the body, repellent, a travel medical kit, communication and evacuation insurance. Travel only in daylight in a suitable vehicle, leave details of your route and avoid political gatherings. In the forest, the group stays with the guide; enter rivers only with local approval.

Getting there and getting around

Access is through eastern Sierra Leone and should be arranged through Gola headquarters or a vetted operator. A suitable four-wheel-drive vehicle is required for the access roads. Confirm the starting point, road conditions and meeting with the park staff member and community guide before departure; older route descriptions are no guarantee.

Where to stay

Accommodation is organised in advance through the park or host community. Official tourism information lists simple community options such as Belebu Community Guesthouse and programmes in Lalehun and Sileti. Clarify mosquito nets, water, meals, charging facilities, toilets, communication and luggage security. Do not expect city standards; allow spare time for weather and roads.

What to try

Food in host communities is usually simple and agreed in advance: rice, cassava, vegetables and, depending on availability, fish or meat. State dietary requirements when booking, ensure water is safe and carry reserve supplies in the vehicle and on walks. Do not buy bushmeat or encourage demand that undermines forest conservation.
