Destination
Gobustan
Gobustan is a semi-desert cultural landscape near Baku. Thousands of petroglyphs, along with traces of earlier settlements, caves and graves, survive among the boulders. The images depict hunting, animals, boats and human life across many eras.
When to go
Plan your walk for cool morning hours and dry weather. The open plateau becomes very hot in summer, and the stony paths can be slippery after rain.
Things to see and do
Start at the museum and visitor centre, then explore the accessible rock art areas with a guide. Take time to observe the landscape, caves and traces of settlements as well.
Practical tips
Do not touch the rock art, leave approved paths or take stones. Follow official travel advice and avoid border areas and restricted parts of Azerbaijan.
Getting there and getting around
Gobustan is usually visited by road from Baku, by car, with a driver or on an organised tour. Confirm admission, opening hours and the return transfer in advance.
Where to stay
Baku is the most practical base because of its wider choice of hotels, transport and restaurants. Plan to return before late evening.
What to try
Try plov, qutab with herbs or meat, dolma, kebabs and Azerbaijani tea with sweets.
