When to go

Spring and autumn are good for walking around, while an early visit is recommended in summer. Steps and paths can be slippery in winter and after precipitation.

Things to see and do

Visit the main church, rock-cut rooms, burial chambers and khachkars. A visit is often combined with the Temple of Garni and viewpoints in the Azat Valley.

Practical tips

Geghard remains a religious site: behave quietly, dress appropriately and follow photography rules. Do not change your route towards Armenia’s eastern border, where travel restrictions apply.

Getting there and getting around

From Yerevan, visitors usually travel to Geghard via Garni by taxi, hire car or tour. Public transport may require changes and an additional taxi.

Where to stay

Most travellers stay in Yerevan. For a quieter stay, consider a guesthouse in Garni with a transfer arranged in advance.

What to try

Try lavash, khorovats, dolma, cheese, herbs and sweet gata. Smaller family-run restaurants can be found around Garni.
