When to go

Spring and early autumn are particularly good for walking. Summer is hot and crowded, so visit museums and major sights early.

Things to see and do

Visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio, walk through the old town and enjoy the view from Piazzale Michelangelo.

Practical tips

Book tickets early for the Uffizi, the Accademia and other popular museums. The historic centre is compact and is mostly explored on foot.

Getting there and getting around

Florence is served by Peretola Airport and connected by high-speed trains to Rome, Milan, Venice and Bologna.

Where to stay

The old town is convenient for a first visit. Santa Croce is good for restaurants and walks, while Oltrarno has a more local atmosphere.

What to try

Try bistecca alla fiorentina, ribollita, pappa al pomodoro and Tuscan pastries.
