Destination
Dubai
Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates and a popular destination on the Persian Gulf. Modern architecture, beaches and large shopping districts meet historic neighbourhoods and traditional markets.
When to go
The cooler months from late autumn to early spring are particularly suitable for walks and outdoor activities. Dubai is very hot in summer, so it is advisable to focus daytime visits on indoor attractions, shopping centres and hotels, and schedule walks for the morning or evening.
Things to see and do
Visit an observation deck at the Burj Khalifa, walk through Downtown Dubai and along Dubai Marina, and discover the historic Al Fahidi neighbourhood and Dubai Creek. Set aside an additional day for the beach or a desert excursion.
Practical tips
Before travelling, check current entry requirements and opening hours on official websites. Early reservations are recommended for popular observation decks and events. Also follow local behaviour rules and choose clothing appropriate to each place.
Getting there and getting around
Most international flights arrive at Dubai International Airport. Metro trains, buses and taxis are available from the airport and within the city. Some tourist neighbourhoods are far apart, so careful route planning is worthwhile.
Where to stay
Downtown Dubai is convenient for a first visit and is close to the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall. Dubai Marina and JBR suit travellers who prefer beaches and promenades. Deira and Bur Dubai are good bases for discovering the city's more historic side.
What to try
Try Emirati and Middle Eastern dishes such as machboos with rice and spices, flatbread and meze, and sweet luqaimat. Thanks to its international population, the city also offers a very wide choice of cuisines from around the world.
