When to go

The cooler, drier period is generally more comfortable for park visits. Flooding, damaged roads, high humidity and changes to tours are possible during the monsoon.

Things to see and do

Choose a licensed operator for drives on authorised routes, birdwatching or a boat trip when water levels are safe. Learn about Terai ecosystems and Tharu culture without staged direct contact with animals.

Practical tips

Wild animals are unpredictable. Always follow ranger or guide instructions, keep your distance and do not leave vehicles where prohibited. Follow park rules and choose an operator with roadworthy vehicles, communications and a clear emergency plan.

Getting there and getting around

Sauraha, Kasara and the western park area are important starting points. From Kathmandu, arrive by domestic flight to Bharatpur, tourist bus or private car, checking the weather and road conditions beforehand.

Where to stay

Sauraha offers the widest choice of accommodation and tours, while smaller lodges in other parts of the buffer zone may be quieter. Clarify transfers, meals, permits and guiding services.

What to try

Try dal bhat and Tharu dishes with rice, lentils, vegetables and fish, as well as flatbread and seasonal fruit.
