Destination
Canaima
As of 7 October 2026, the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to this destination. This page introduces culture and history; we do not currently recommend tourist travel. Canaima is a Venezuelan national park with tepuis, waterfalls and river landscapes, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When to go
Water levels affect river connections, but the season does not override advice against non-essential travel.
Things to see and do
UNESCO materials explain the geology of the tepuis and the park's natural value without the need to organise a journey.
Practical tips
Stricter warnings apply to several border zones and other parts of the country. Conditions are not the same on every route through this extensive park.
Getting there and getting around
We do not currently recommend an ordinary tourist itinerary combining flights and boat transfers; availability can change.
Where to stay
Do not book camps solely on the basis of this information page; descriptions of nature do not confirm that guests are currently being accommodated.
What to try
Arepas and cassava dishes are part of Venezuelan cuisine; the diverse traditions of local communities deserve respectful engagement.
