Brimstone Hill Fortress
Brimstone Hill is a well-preserved fortress complex of the 17th and 18th centuries on a steep volcanic hill on St Kitts. It was designed by the British and built by enslaved Africans.
When to go
Cool mornings and dry weather suit a visit. During tropical storm season, check the forecast, road conditions and possible closures.
Things to see and do
Visit Fort George Citadel, the bastions, barracks and exhibitions, and enjoy views of the coast and neighbouring islands.
Practical tips
Approach the history of slavery and colonial wars respectfully. Bring water and sun protection, and take care on uneven steps and exposed sections of the walls.
Getting there and getting around
The fortress is usually reached from Basseterre along the west-coast road by car, taxi or tour. The final climb is winding; arrange reliable transport.
Where to stay

What to try
Try goat water stew, saltfish, Johnny cakes, plantains and dishes with local vegetables.
