Bonaire National Marine Park

Country: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba Updated:

Bonaire National Marine Park protects the coastal waters around Bonaire and Klein Bonaire from the high-water mark to a depth of about 60 metres. It includes coral reefs, seagrass areas, mangroves and the Lac Bay lagoon. The park is known for easily accessible shore diving, numerous marked entry points and diverse reef life.

When to go

The park is accessible throughout the year: the water is warm, and Bonaire lies south of the main track of many hurricanes. Demand for accommodation is highest from December to April; spring and early summer are often quieter. September to November can be hotter and wetter; check wind, visibility and local advice before every dive.

Things to see and do

Snorkel or dive at authorised entries marked by yellow stones, take a boat to Klein Bonaire and explore the seagrass and mangrove channels of Lac Bay with a licensed guide. Do not step on coral or pursue turtles. Separate zones apply to kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Practical tips

Pay the compulsory Nature Fee before using the marine park; carry proof of payment together with identification. Disinfect diving equipment to avoid spreading coral diseases, do not anchor on the reef and follow STINAPA rules. Use certified operators and diving insurance, and do not leave valuables in your vehicle at remote entry points.

Getting there and getting around

Most travellers arrive at Flamingo International Airport near Kralendijk. A rental car is convenient for shore-diving sites, but park only where permitted. Klein Bonaire can be reached by water taxi or boat; dive centres organise trips to more distant reef sections.

Where to stay

Kralendijk is convenient for restaurants, jetties and dive centres. Hato and Belnem offer quick access to shore-diving sites; Lac Bay suits windsurfing and a quiet lagoon. Frequent divers should choose accommodation with an equipment washing and drying area.

What to try

Try kabritu stoba goat stew, keshi yena, pastechi, funchi, fresh fish, dishes made with invasive lionfish and kadushi cactus soup.
