Destination
Belize Barrier Reef
The Belize Barrier Reef is a system of protected marine areas with coral reefs, atolls, sandy islands, mangrove forests, lagoons and river mouths. These areas provide habitat for sea turtles, manatees and numerous fish species.
When to go
Boat trips are easier to plan in drier, calmer weather. Tropical storms and hurricanes are possible from June to November; check the forecast and cancellation terms.
Things to see and do
Choose a licensed operator for snorkelling, diving or boat tours. Depending on the route, visits may include protected reefs, the Blue Hole, Half Moon Caye or other permitted areas.
Practical tips
Do not touch coral or feed animals, and follow marine protected-area rules. Check life jackets, sea conditions and diving insurance, and watch your valuables in tourist areas.
Getting there and getting around
The journey usually begins at Belize's international airport or in Belize City. From there, domestic flights or water taxis serve island and coastal settlements.
Where to stay
San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Placencia are popular starting points. Choose accommodation according to the length of the boat trip to your desired reef section.
What to try
Try rice and beans, stewed chicken, fry jacks, ceviche, fish and other seafood.
