Barbuda Frigate Bird Sanctuary
The frigate bird sanctuary is in Codrington Lagoon on Barbuda and protects one of the largest colonies of magnificent frigatebirds in the Western Hemisphere. Mangrove islands provide nesting grounds for thousands of birds; males are known for their bright red throat pouches. The colony is accessible only by small boat with a local guide.
When to go
Birdwatching is possible in various months, but bird activity, lagoon conditions and boat timetables change with the season and weather. Confirm a tour with a local guide in advance; light, heat and water conditions are generally more pleasant early in the morning.
Things to see and do
Take a quiet boat trip through the lagoon, observe nests with binoculars and compare males, females and young birds. Do not enter nesting islands or crowd birds for photographs, and use drones only with explicit permission.
Practical tips
Bring a hat, sun protection, water, binoculars and splash protection for equipment. Follow the boat operator's instructions, speak quietly and do not feed birds. Connections may change or be cancelled during tropical storm season; check the weather and your return journey.
Getting there and getting around
Barbuda can be reached from Antigua by plane or ferry; the official Barbuda Express usually connects St John's with the island in about ninety minutes. From Codrington, travel to the sanctuary by small boat with a local guide. Confirm all legs of the journey beforehand.
Where to stay
Barbuda has small guesthouses and only a limited choice of other accommodation; many visitors come on a day trip from Antigua. Book early, clarify transfers from the harbour or airfield and allow room for weather-related changes.
What to try
Barbuda's cuisine is based on fresh fish, lobster, conch, rice, cassava, plantains and tropical fruit. Order seasonal seafood from lawful providers, agree the price beforehand and do not buy products from protected species.
