Banc d’Arguin National Park
Banc d’Arguin National Park is a vast coastal area where desert dunes meet shallow bays, islands, mudflats and seagrass meadows. The landscape is of global importance for wintering and breeding birds, sea turtles, dolphins and fish.
When to go
The cooler season is generally better for this remote journey and for birdwatching. Strong wind, sand, tides, heat and sea conditions can change the route at any time.
Things to see and do
Arrange birdwatching and coastal exploration only with an authorised operator. Depending on permits and conditions, the programme may include four-wheel-drive journeys, coastal settlements and boat trips with local guides.
Practical tips
The park is far from medical assistance, fuel and reliable communications. You need an experienced driver, a suitable off-road vehicle, permits, drinking water, reserve fuel, satellite or backup communications and an evacuation plan. Check the current FCDO advice map before travelling and do not enter areas subject to advice against all travel or against all but essential travel.
Getting there and getting around
Access is organised from Nouakchott or Nouadhibou through agreed park entrances. The route depends on sand, tides and permits; independent travel without a local operator and suitable vehicle is not safe.
Where to stay
Accommodation is generally basic: arranged camps or simple lodging in coastal settlements. Confirm water, hygiene, food, communications, security and an alternative return plan.
What to try
Fresh fish, rice, couscous, simple vegetable dishes and Mauritanian tea are common on the coast. You must carry your own supplies of drinking water and non-perishable food.
