Destination
Athens
Athens is Greece's capital and combines ancient heritage with modern city life. The Acropolis, archaeological sites, museums and historic neighbourhoods meet lively squares, cafés, markets and views of the surrounding hills.
When to go
Spring and autumn are particularly good for walks and visits to archaeological sites. Athens can be very hot in summer, so outdoor attractions are more comfortable early in the morning or in the evening. Winter is cooler and often suits museums and longer walks in the centre.
Things to see and do
Visit the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum, and walk through Plaka, Monastiraki and the historic centre. Climb one of the city's hills for a panoramic view and allow time for the National Garden or a walk between ancient sights.
Practical tips
Check tickets, opening hours and possible restrictions for the Acropolis and other popular attractions on official websites in advance. Water and sun protection are important in summer, and the hottest hours of the day should be avoided. Many routes through the historic centre are easy to walk.
Getting there and getting around
International flights arrive at Athens International Airport. The centre can be reached by metro, bus and taxi. Metro trains, buses and trams operate in the city, while Plaka, Monastiraki and the historic centre are easy to explore on foot.
Where to stay
Plaka is convenient for a first visit because of its proximity to the Acropolis and historic streets. Monastiraki offers a central location and good transport connections. Koukaki has a quieter atmosphere near the Acropolis, while Syntagma is convenient for transport and walks in the centre.
What to try
Try souvlaki, gyros, Greek salad, dishes with feta and traditional meze. For dessert, choose baklava or yoghurt with honey. Markets and small tavernas offer an introduction to everyday Athenian food.
