Arikok National Park
Arikok National Park covers roughly a fifth of Aruba and protects dry hills, lava and limestone formations, cactus landscapes, caves and the rugged east coast. It contains endemic species, Indigenous rock drawings, Boca Prins, Dos Playa and the Conchi natural pool.
When to go
The park can be visited throughout the year; arriving at opening time before the intense heat is most comfortable. December to April is generally more comfortable and drier, although Aruba is arid overall. Pay attention to tropical weather from June to November; wind, surf and brief showers are always possible.
Things to see and do
Start at the San Fuego visitor centre and choose permitted routes to Cunucu Arikok, Fontein and Quadirikiri caves, Jamanota, Boca Prins or Dos Playa. Visit the Conchi natural pool only with a suitable four-wheel-drive vehicle or licensed guide and when sea conditions are safe.
Practical tips
There is little shade in the park: bring plenty of water, a hat and sun protection. Do not swim on the exposed east coast in heavy surf, touch petroglyphs or animals, or leave permitted roads. Check rental conditions, as rough tracks are often excluded.
Getting there and getting around
From Oranjestad, Noord and the hotel zone, travel by car, taxi or organised tour to the San Fuego entrance. An ordinary car is sufficient for the main roads and several stops; remote rough routes require four-wheel drive. Public buses do not enter the park.
Where to stay
Oranjestad is convenient for the city and a short drive, Palm Beach for a wide choice of hotels, and San Nicolas for the south and a quieter atmosphere. For an early start, choose accommodation with parking and confirm vehicle collection or transfer times beforehand.
What to try
Try keshi yena in a cheese casing, pastechi, fish soup, goat stoba, pan bati corn flatbread and fresh fish.
