Ancient Merv
Ancient Merv is the extensive archaeological landscape of the Murghab oasis and one of the most completely preserved sequences of cities on the Silk Road. Its history spans around four thousand years. The park includes Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala, medieval Sultan Kala, Sultan Sanjar's mausoleum, fortifications, mosques, Buddhist remains and the later Abdullah Khan Kala.
When to go
Cool mornings in spring or autumn are more comfortable for a visit; summer temperatures can be very high. Confirm access, the opening of individual monuments and guides in advance through a reliable operator. Paths can be soft after rain, while heat, dust and wind can make sightseeing difficult.
Things to see and do
With a guide, compare Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala and Sultan Kala, and visit Sultan Sanjar's mausoleum, walls, köshks, mosques and Buddhist remains. Do not climb fragile earthen walls, enter closed excavation areas or take pottery; ask permission before taking photographs.
Practical tips
Photographing airports, police, military and government buildings is sensitive in Turkmenistan; ask beforehand. Internet and mobile services can be unreliable or restricted, and medical care outside Ashgabat is basic. Evacuation insurance, water, sun protection and prescriptions are needed.
Getting there and getting around
Mary is the usual starting point; from there, travel to the park with a pre-booked vehicle and guide. Do not rely on finding taxis spontaneously or on a stable mobile connection. Confirm the meeting point, route, permits, opening hours and return journey; avoid overland travel after dark.
Where to stay
An officially operated place to stay in Mary, with a day trip to Merv, is more practical. Clarify registration, payment, air conditioning, drinking water, internet, early breakfast and transport. Do not assume that remote places have cash machines, English-speaking staff or rapid medical assistance.
What to try
Plov, shurpa, manti, meat dishes, flatbread and green tea are common in the region. Choose thoroughly cooked food and only bottled, boiled or reliably filtered water; avoid ice of unknown origin. Bring water and a small snack for long sightseeing visits.
