Amboseli National Park
Amboseli is a national park in southern Kenya, known for elephants, open plains and wetlands. In clear weather, Mount Kilimanjaro in neighbouring Tanzania can be seen above the landscape.
When to go
Drier periods generally make driving through the park easier; tracks can become more difficult after rain. Views of Kilimanjaro depend on cloud cover and are never guaranteed.
Things to see and do
Watch elephants and waterbirds on game drives. Visit Observation Hill if it is accessible; an early start allows time for quiet observation and photographs.
Practical tips
Keep your distance and do not block animals' paths. Leave your vehicle only where permitted; confirm entry times, payment arrangements and your route with the management or operator.
Getting there and getting around
Many visitors arrive from Nairobi in a safari vehicle; flights to a local airstrip are another possibility. Agree the route to the relevant gates with your host.
Where to stay
Compare lodges inside the park with camps in surrounding conservation areas. Important factors include driving time to the gate, included fees, meals and the number of game drives.
What to try
Lodges often combine international cuisine with Kenyan dishes. Try ugali or sukuma wiki greens if available; let your hosts know dietary requirements in good time.
